The French President’s unexpected decision to call parliamentary elections is still reverberating, with concerns that the move may trigger a political and financial crisis at the heart of Europe. This pessimism caused a sell-off in the French stock market and led to a sharp increase in the country’s sovereign debt interest, with some observers even suggesting the possibility of emergency purchases of French bonds by the ECB. Against this background, currency traders have increased bets against the single currency, with the outlook remaining bearish for the euro in the run-up to the election on July 7.
