Economic data could weigh on DAX

Frank Sohlleder
February 27, 2025

Yesterday, Wednesday, the DAX was again able to present itself positively and end the trading day with a significant gain of 1.7 percent. This means that the DAX is heading back towards 23,000 points, but the US trading session that began in the afternoon pushed the DAX back again after hours, so that some of the profit had to be given up again. The reason for this is to be found in the economic data reported yesterday, Wednesday. Not only has consumer sentiment in Germany surprisingly fallen, but the much-watched index of new contracts concluded for home purchases in the USA has also declined surprisingly significantly. Is this the hint with the fence post for investors that trouble could soon be imminent in the German leading index? However, Siemens Energy shares are unimpressed by this and set a clear exclamation mark with a performance of over 8.5 percent. But caution is also advised here, because the sell-off in the last trading week was quite clear and this may be a last gasp before a major correction, which could also be emblematic of the DAX.

FTSE gains again after weak days

The British stock index also rises again in the middle of the week, much to the delight of investors in the middle of the week. The mining stocks, which have recently been badly battered, were able to benefit from the strengthening of the copper price, which was able to increase significantly due to the activities surrounding the tariff increases on the part of the USA. Bank shares were also strong on Wednesday. The share of the company Convatec put a clear outlier upwards on the trading floor. At the end of the trading day, the share price premium was 5.2 percent after the company presented excellent results. Today, Thursday, the preliminary growth of gross domestic product will be reported in the USA. In connection with the economic data mentioned, this could give an indication of how the markets will continue and whether there may be an impetus from the USA for an incipient correction.
