DAX with Slight Gain on Monday - FTSE 100 Weak

Frank Sohlleder
February 25, 2025

The trading day on Monday ended with the DAX up by 0.6 percent, closing at 22,425 points. Investors responded to the results of the German federal election, expressing their optimism through stock purchases. Among the top performers were Volkswagen, whose shares rose by 3.9 percent, Commerzbank, which also gained 3.9 percent, and Vonovia, achieving a performance increase of 3.6 percent.

Market participants are anticipating an economic upswing with the new government. This sentiment is echoed by congratulatory messages from countries like Poland and Italy, highlighting expectations of positive economic developments from a European perspective. Even Donald Trump commented positively on the German election, though he did not mention Friedrich Merz by name.

Weak Start to the Week for the British FTSE 100

Turning to the British FTSE 100, which has shown strong performance recently, some investors might be feeling uneasy. The UK stock index declined again on Monday, marking the fourth consecutive day of losses. The primary reason for this downturn was the performance of individual stocks in the mining sector. Falling prices in the metal market, particularly for copper and iron ore, negatively impacted the valuations of mining companies.

Meanwhile, the euro dropped back below 1.05 US dollars. After a strong start on Monday, it quickly gave up its gains. Nevertheless, the euro remained relatively stable just below the 1.05 mark, as the market absorbed the German election results and priced them into the currency.
